Grayson B

Unfortunately in today’s age of electronics, it is becoming increasingly more unusual to see kids playing outside. That’s not the case in Grayson’s neighborhood. Grayson isn’t your typical grade-schooler. At age 6, he’s already an avid cycler. He not only rides himself, but he’s encouraging other kids and adults to join him.
Grayson learned to ride a bike without training wheels at the age of three. Since that time, he has been enthusiastically riding his bike around his neighborhood. And Grayson doesn’t just ride a little, he rides a lot! He easily rides five miles a day, making laps around his neighborhood. He also enjoys riding on the Nickel Plate Trail. At age five he rode the trail all the way from the trailhead at Wallick Road to Bunker Hill and back.
Most nights Grayson has a “gang” of five riders. Grayson is joined by his mom and dad and neighbors’ David and Thea on his nightly rides. However the group can grow to as many as 10, including adults and kids, depending on who is out on any given evening. The gang has become known as Team G and members have matching Team G cycling Jerseys to prove it. Grayson and Team G have inspired many in their neighborhood to become cyclists. One of his neighbors even recently purchased new bikes, so they could become a part of his cycling team.
Grayson has also inspired his younger neighbors to become cyclists. One of his favorite activities is playing Tour De France complete with breakaways, chase groups, the peloton and of course crashes. One of his two-year-old neighbors even convinced her grandpa to buy her a bike after watching Grayson ride.
Grayson has wanted a road bike for as long as he has been riding. He wanted to be like his dad and David. He would beg for road bike handle bars to be put on his 18-inch Huffy. David enjoys tinkering with bicycles, and one day when he was in Breakaway, he asked Zac if he had a free bike he could fix up for Grayson. Zac found a small 1970’s Huffy lying in the back of the shop. David painted it Grayson’s favorite color (green) and painted TEAM G on the down tube and put a G on the head badge. The bike is still a little too big for Grayson to ride on the road, but he enjoys riding it in the yard and watching his dad or David ride it around the neighborhood. He checks daily to see if he has grown enough overnight to ride it and knows he will soon be big enough to ride his very own road bike. Dad is fairly sure he will be riding it before next summer!
